Detox Teas: What Are They & Do They Actually Work?

Detoxification, or ‘detox’ as it’s more popularly known, includes a range of diets, regimens and therapies that assist in ridding the body of toxins, helping with weight loss and to prevent ageing.

Due to the high-quality, natural ingredients we use in our teas, on top of making them delicious it makes them excellent options for detox.

What Are ‘Detox Teas’?

Teas can play a supportive role in detoxification due to their natural properties, which may help the body eliminate toxins, improve digestion, and promote overall health, and detox teas have been growing in demand.

We recommend some of our healthiest green teas and herbal teas as great options to incorporate into a detox routine.

What Teas Count as ‘Detox Teas’?

While all our teas are healthy, we have curated a list of some teas with specific ingredients or properties that make them ideal for detoxing. Ingredients such as lemongrass, peppermint, ginger and pure green tea are positively brimming with health benefits.

Here are several ways various types of teas can aid in the detox process.

Lemongrass & Ginger Tea

A refreshing herbal blend that aids digestion and reduces bloating.

Ginger has been used for centuries to treat a digestive issue and stomach pain, and Lemongrass is a natural diuretic which can help to reduce bloating and expediate the removal of waste products from the body.

Peppermint Tea Leaves

Peppermint tea is known for its ability to soothe digestive issues. It may help relieve symptoms of indigestion, bloating, and gas by relaxing the muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.

Organic Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea is naturally rich in antioxidants, including a unique antioxidant called ‘aspalathin’ which is only found in Rooibos tea.

Due to being caffeine-free, rooibos can be useful for reducing stress and anxiety, both of which negatively impact the bodily functions and the body’s ability to detox.

Sencha Green Tea

Green tea and other herbal teas might support metabolism and weight management, which can be beneficial for individuals looking to detoxify through dietary changes.

Matcha Green Tea

Matcha is particularly high in antioxidants, notably catechins, which are a type of flavonoid. The most prominent catechin in matcha is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), known for its detoxifying properties. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and supporting overall cellular health.

How Do Detox Teas Work?

Detox teas are primarily liquid, which means they contribute to overall fluid intake. Staying hydrated is essential for the kidney to effectively filter and remove waste products from the blood. Proper hydration ensures that bodily processes function efficiently, including those involved in detoxification.

Ingredients in detox teas often promote diuresis (increased urine productions) which is critical for eliminating waste. By enhancing kidney function and promoting urination, detox teas can help expel excess water, salts and metabolic waste from the body.

Do Detox Teas Actually Work?

Detox is a relatively new health trend, and while it shows promise it is most effective alongside an overall healthy lifestyle and diet. It is most effective when it comes to reducing bloating and improving digestion.

Studies have found some promising results regarding detox benefits, primarily for weight loss, insulin resistance and blood pressure

Detox teas should not be used as a replacement for any medical treatment. We recommend contacting a medical professional if you have any questions or concerns.

How to Brew and Enjoy Detox Teas

Brewing techniques do vary from tea to tea. All our products come with clear instructions on the temperature, the time and the amount of tea for a perfect cup to help you detox.

As a general rule, brew green tea at 70-80c for 2-3 minutes and brew herbal teas at 100c for 3-5 minutes.

We recommend drinking detox teas in the morning or after a meal to maximise their effectiveness, and you will reap the best benefits when accompanied by a healthy and balanced diet.
